Kourtney Kardashian Colored Her Hair While Pregnant — Is That Safe?
GinsburgSpaly / The BumpSo who here got highlights while pregnant? Kourtney Kardashian is catching some flak about it. Kourtney, who’s now pregnant with baby number two, recently blogged about the decision to highlight her hair while pregnant and even went so far as to explain that she made special efforts to make sure she was doing it safely.
She wrote on her blog: “I did research about doing anything to the color of my hair while pregnant and followed all of the guidelines from my doctor and took the proper precautions necessary. I highlighted my hair (which is considered the safest form of hair color while pregnant) and NOT to the root, so nothing ever touched my scalp. I also used products that did not contain any ammonia. It is also recommended to be in a well-ventilated area as well as being at least in your second trimester, and I followed both of those rules. Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I take caution in all the products I use all the time, but especially when pregnant.”
We’ve talked to a medical expert in the past, who basically said, if you’re going to do it, do it the way Kourtney did: wait until after the first trimester, do highlights instead of dyes so it doesn’t touch your scalp and go ammonia- and peroxide-free. (In fact, we wonder if Kourtney did her research on The Bump!) But still, some commenters on Kourtney’s blog are calling her selfish for even risking it.
What do you think? Is it selfish to color your hair while pregnant? Or are people overreacting?

I did it too! The same way. There is no point in looking like an ugly old hag with gray roots just because you are expecting. People have done much worse things while pregnant and this is relatively safe. People need to stop judging others!
i agree michelle! this is so petty!
come on – there is no scientific proof it is bad anyway! and if you go by that doctrine, then you shouldn’t wear any make-up or use body lotion or skincare prodcuts either, as none of them on the market are totally “pure” and most of those ingredients are untested. just relax, eat healthy, work out, get rest and drink a lot of water – THAT’S what’s most important for you and your baby.
I’ve got red hair, and am a natural blonde. Been dying my hair for years. I talked with my doctor about it, and she said it’s absolutely fine. Dyed my hair once every 5-6 weeks for root touch-ups while pregnant with my first child (including during the first trimester), and he turned out just fine – not a thing wrong with him. Doing it again now, while pregnant with my second, and I’m 3 weeks away from delivery. And guess what? Baby number two is doing great, too.
I think people just want to tear apart someone famous for SOMETHING they deem wrong. Most people like the ones giving her crap thrive on judging others. It’s ridiculous, and they need to get the heck over it already.
I’m a hair stylist and a mom. It is completely safe!! Unless you are injesting it, you are fine. I was around all of that for my entire pregnancy as well as I colored my hair and my daughter is happy and healthy.
