I used a "leash" when my daughter first started walking well. She was 10 months and too little to hold hands well but wanted to walk and not ride in the stroller. It let me let her walk and bring the stroller so we could go on longer walks. I didn't really use it for very long and mostly for the above reason but if I had a runner I would still use it....it was helpful when I needed it. We called ours the backpack and she still plays with it on occasion. That being said I have seen them being used as a way to not pay attention to there kids and I don't agree with that.

If I had a runner, I would use a leash (luckily, no one flat out bolts just yet!) I love Modern Family - it's really intriguing to get people to identify with the gay adopting couple (when you're straight with biological children) - even their relationship dynamics - I'll find myself saying to my husband - "that's so like you!"
