Recall Alert! Bumbo Baby Seats
Photo Credit: CPSC / The BumpThis morning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Bumbo International Trust voluntarily recalled 4 million of its Bumbo Baby Seats. The recall comes after a series of reports of babies falling from the seat when placed on an elevated surface.
Since 2007, there have been over 50 reports of injuries involving the seat, which include skull fractures, minor head injuries, as well as bumps and bruises. The recalled seat was sold at Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies, and Walmart, from August 2003 through August 2012 for between $30 and $50.
If you think you may have a recalled Bumbo Baby Seat, check the bottom of the seat for the follow words: ”Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.”

“The recall comes after a series of reports of babies falling from the seat when placed on an elevated surface.”
It states clearly on the box NOT to place the seat on an elevated surface. I can’t believe people don’t understand why this is dangerous. It really blows me away!
Maybe they shouldn’t be placed on an elevated surface. I think it says that directly on the safety instructions.
I’m pretty sure you’re right
I’m with you. If parents would listen to the rules already in place & use common sense this wouldn’t be an issue.
Agreed! That is just asking for a fall.
Agree 100%.
My thoughts exactly…..
Here’s an idea, use some common sense and don’t put them on elevated surfaces!!!
I agree. Don not place your child in the seat on an elevated surface! The instructions that come with the seat say not to use on an elevated surface.
It’s very clearly stated in multiple areas… but, some people still don’t think they need to watch their children.
Yeah, this one is a no-brainer! I love our bumbo seat and it stays on the floor at all times! It’s silly when parents make questionable decisions and try to blame a company because of their stupidity!
No joke! It’s too bad people can’t take responsibility for their own dumb mistakes! Use common sense, people!!!!!
That’s exactly what I was thinking! There’s no way I would have stuck my baby on an elevated surface, belted into something or not! You just have to use your brain here people!
I agree! I loved our Bumbo seat for all 3 of our kids. I was never stupid enough to set it up on a counter, table, or other elevated surface. Duh! Even if the baby is strapped in and they fall, they are still going to get injured. I don’t know what these parents are thinking. Safety, people! Protect your kids and use common sense!
Pathetic! A company should not have to recall their reliable product because of pure stupidity! Sorry Bumbo! I will still purchase your product. PS on the packaging out says always watch your children and keep children off of elevated surfaces.
Mine specifically reads “do not place on elevated surface”. Hello people!
Uhm yeah lol I agree with the above ladies, geez what is this world coming to!?!
Bumbos were recalled years ago for injuries on an elevated surface. They added it into the warnings and there was a lot of press on it. So why are they doing it again? I thought it was now common sense not to have these on an elevated surface! And a safety belt isn’t really going to change that..,
It is called watching your child!
I completly agree ladies! Every time they recall a bumbo seat it makes me mad! READ THE WARNINGS and use common sence!!
I agree with you all. I know plenty of parents that put their babies in the Bumbo on the counter or table. It says very clear on the instructions not to do that. We always kept our LO on the floor when he did use it. Babies are squirmy anyway. You never know when they are going to start trying to get out of it.
This is riduculous. The product directions clearly state it must never be used on an elevated surface. Now this company has to spend all this money because parents can’t follow simple directions. We love ours as do our kids and they have never been in danger because we use it on the floor as it is intended.
Things should just be manufactured with careless people in mind. There are a lot of people that just don’t read instructions to baby stuff, and will go ahead and put them on elevated or hard surfaces and turn away for long enough for something to happen. I don’t think the belt will help that much either because most of the injury reports are from babies leaning back and the whole seat falling backwards. They need to make it stable so it can’t fall over! If you watch your children and are there with them and use it properly then you will be fine.
Why were these seats even invented? So odd to have a seat that holds the baby up when they need to do so themselves to strengthen their muscles. I guess I don’t see the need for 4 million folks to be using this in the first place
The Bumbo is the BEST seat for helping a baby develop the ability to sit upright, strengthening their muscles and giving them great posture. I used this seat for many, many babies in my daycare over the past few years and all have developed very nice posture. Also I was careful to follow the instructions NOT to place the seat on an elevated surface. When these seats are used properly, they are wonderful for both caregiver and child. Babies LOVE being able to sit up and see around them before they would be able to sit independently!
Who puts their kid in a bumbo on an elevated surface?? Common sense should be used when using a Bumbo and you shouldnt leave your child unattended or on elevated surfaces..
Wow. So a group of ignorant parents think its a good idea to put their child in a bumbo seat on an elevated surface only for something to go wrong, and its bumbo’s fault.
Why are people so stupid? Gravity isn’t a hard concept to grasp, and anyone who can’t figure it.out shouldn’t be parents anyway.
This recall disgusts me.
We love our seat!!! You just need to be smart as a parent and not leave your child unattended in any type of seat that is not restrained..
We will continue using our seat and I will tell everyone I know how amazing it is.. A must have in my opinion..
I agree! On the outside it looks as though the company’s reputation is being tarnished but the truth is the questionable choices that the parents are making affects everyone. My chunky girl barely fits in the bumbo so there is no way I can buckle a safety belt. Just leave them on the floor people!
Umm…does the seatbelt keep it from falling off the table? I don’t see how it helps.
I own this seat since 2008 it is now being used by my third child. I agree with te moms above, don’t put blame on the company because as a parent you can make a wise decision. Besides we ALL have to use better judgement even if a company forgot or not to put in warning of how to or not use it. Love my Bumbo
I can’t believe they had to do a recall bc of common sense challenged parents! Now they can strap the child in and he/she will just fall WITH the bumbo… I am disgusted at the fact that Any parent would put their child on an elevated surface unattended period. There should really be some kind of aptitude yesterday to become a parent. C’mon people!!
agreed. If we ever put ours anywhere but the ground I am right there. User error shouldn’t mean recalls. Not to mention the company now has to do a ton of damage control.
the bumbo seat is NOT a highchair, nor a place to leave your child unattended. People are ridiculous.
It’s only because parents are being dumb! Don’t leave your child on the counter or table or anywhere but the floor! This is such a forehead slapper! I love our bumbo as well, and now that my daughter is a little bigger and moving around its great to get her to sit in one place. Come On Parents…have some common Sense!
I loved the Bumbo and so did my kids and would always use the tray. I kept them on the floor and never put it on elevated surfaces. I think its common sense not to put it on elevated surfaces and if someone did, then to never leave the child unsupervised. I always knew when it was time to stop using the Bumbo, when my kids would start to push themselves up, as if trying to get out. Once my kids started doing that, I stopped putting them in the Bumbo.
Anyone whose child falls out of a bumbo and *fractures* their skull is obviously not using it correctly!!!! Of course if you place your child up on a table or couch, they’re at a huge risk of wiggling out and being very badly hurt. Maybe the parents should be recalled, not the bumbos.
It’s really sad that there have been any injuries with this seat. My child is 20 months now so we obviously don’t use ours any longer; however we never had any problems with ours. I think as parents we need to take responsibilities for our own stupidity (leaving baby unattended) instead of blaming it on the product!
Why are people leaving their child unattended in a chair on an elevated surface? Might as well put on the counter and let them roll off. Our bumbo stays on the floor and I sit next to my child while he is in it. But I still order the safety belt to make my husband happy. He’s a big safety nut.
This is a matter of common sense ! Don’t sit the baby on an elevated surface .
The seat belt is not going to help parents will still put them on a elevated surface and the seat will just fall with them!!
If people would watch their kids this wouldn’t be an issue. Just because you put a seatbelt in it doesn’t make it safer.
I never had a problem with mine, but always keep my daughter on the floor while using it, even with a safety belt, an infant could still fall off of counter, table, etc any elevated surface
I’m so tired of people not taking responsibility for their own actions. If you placed your baby on an elevated surface he/she could fall off. It’s simple. Now we’ll lose a great seat because of pure stupidity!
This entire thing drives me crazy! Its unfortunate that babies have been injured due to a Clueless parent. It clearly says on the box and the seat itself to NOT use in water or elevated surfaces. C’mon folks! Would you really sit your baby in the tub or on a table and just walk away, Bumbo or not? If your baby can get out or even tries to get out, then they are obviously too old for it and could probably sit up on their own by then. I LOVE the Bumbo, and 3 kids later, still love it! I will continue to recommend this seat.
Another recall due to operator error? It’s not difficult to read directions on a product
So by adding a seat belt they won’t hurt themselves if they fall off elevated surfaces? This doesn’t make any sense! People, DON”T put the bumbo on an elevated surface with your baby in it!!!! Read the directions!
Why would you even put a bumbo seat on an elevated surface? Use common sense people!
Never used his product because it just looked cheaP and a lazy way to watch the children
When reading this the first thing that came to my mind is doesn’t it say that right on the bumbo chair. Come on people learn to read and comprehend what you read.
A seatbelt is not going to help if the problem is falling off of an elevated surface. That Bumbo will just go with baby.
Use your brains and take responsibility for your actions. Watch your children, don’t blame the seat, blame the people who put their kid in the seat and didn’t watch them. I had one of those seats (so did my sister, that’s where I got it from) and had my child in it on multiple surfaces both high and low and NEVER had a problem. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!!! Today’s society is so quick to point the finger at someone else for their short comings or mistakes it is really quite pathetic. God Bless sue happy America, forever blaming others for their problems! Ridiculous!
Seriously? Sounds like another McDonald’s “hot coffee” compliant to me. Don’t leave your baby unattended on an elevated surface to begin with!
It’s not the seat that’s the issue, why would you put a seat like that on an elevated surface. Seriously, im a paramedic, I see this stupidity way to often. Common sense people, and watch your kids ! The bumbo baby seat is getting a bad wrap for no reason!
They had babies getting cracked heads and concussions even when it was placed on the floor according to the research. I wouldn’t be so quick to judge when you don’t have all of the facts.
On an elevated service? Now really!
Sad that they have to do a recall on this wonderful item do to the stupidity of the parents
I AGREE the seat is to be used on the floor NOT on a table, counter or elevated surface!!!! Come on if your baby can sit up with support then im sure they can throw themselves foward, its common sense!!!
I called the number, but it’s not working…
I agree. It’s common sense that babies can lean forward and fall out. Hence don’t put on table or counter tops.
I completely agree!! Don’t sit a baby on any high surface. We love ours and have never had an accident.
It can be dangerous even on the floor. My daughter started pushing herself out of it and she is only 14 weeks. She will straighten her body out with the upper half of her body leaning over the backside. It could tip backwards and she could hurt her back or hit her head hard. It needs to have a safety restraint even if it sits on the floor. I hardly use it because I’m afraid she will hurt her back.
The bumbo was recalled before due to parent stupidity! It’s ridiculous that companies have to recall products for reasons such as this. Clearly, if a child is not strapped in they could fall out, and guess what, even if they are strapped in parents, they can still squirm their way out of things! Use good judgement, and don’t leave your child unattended if there is any chance that they could fall or be injured. I for one am sick of seeing these alerts, getting worried, then finding out that it is something like this.
It definitely says on the instructions that is not to be used on elevated surfaces. I am pretty sure it says on the bumbo itself. Can’t quite remember though. Not sure why it is so hard to follow instructions. Not sure why the company should be blamed for the users stupidity.
It’s easier to blame the bumbo rather than admit your not being an attentive parent! Keep the bumbo on the floor and watch your cild!
I agree with you gals. Many of the recalls that are made are of companies having to dumb down there product due to ignorant parents. Its frightening really. However, I have a concern about bumbo’s repair kit consisting of a restraint belt. Is this giving parents the okay to put the seat on an elevated surface because now there will be a belt? I fear having the child restrained in the seat could result in more injuries and perhaps more serious injuries. Forgive the comparison for a moment here, but I think this is as dangerous as if motorcyclists had to wear a seat belt. If a child falls and cannot fall out of the seat because of restraints the outcome could be more severe. Babies ( which are a bit top heavy despite the wide base construction of the bumbo seat) are more likely to fall on there head resulting in a head and/or neck injury. In this scenario, the parent would have to move the child in order to free them from the restraints possibly adding or worsening injuries. Bumbo, I’m sorry you have to cater to so many dumb parents but this repair kit is not the answer. More warnings or picture based warnings directly on the product might do it, then again it might not. : (
I love the seat its just these dumb parents that put the seat on tables, couches and etc..they are to stay on the floor. The seat is helping my baby to sit up.I love this seat
What idiots. Don’t put it up high. It is common sense, and pretty sure it says not to do that with the seat.
I totally agree with both of you. I just looked at my seats and it says right on the lower left side that you should not use on elevated surfaces.
I agree this product is to be used on the floor, not elevated surfaces. It should not be recalled because parents are not smart enough to use the bumbo. Wow!!!
Seriously! It is about time that companies stop taking the abuse for parents stupidity! People, take freaking responsibility for your actions and think before you put your baby up high assuming they are safe. It’s YOU’RE responsibility to make sure they are safe. Not the company’s.
I completely agree!!! We received one of these as a gift from my brother in law. His daughter is too old for it now. Turns out its one of the one recalled. I would have NEVER thought to put it on an elevated surface even without the instructions telling me not to do so. No brainer indeed.
I agree with Ashley 100%
I NEVER used ours on an elevated surface.. who would think that would be safe???
these are awesome seats if your child isnt to chubby for them like my son was but really lets use common sense hear. thats like putting a child on a table by themselves and not expect them to fall off. i was wondering how long it was going to be before they recalled these
So the fix is to strap it on to the child so that when it falls the Bumbo goes along with them? How about people start taking responsibility for their own dumb actions…follow instructions and don’t put the thing on anything but the floor. Use common sense for pete’s sake!
It’s common sense to leave it on the floor if yor baby is inside of it. The bumbo is awesome and companies shouldn’t have to pay for people’s stupidity.
Agreed with the above posters! I will still be ordering the kit just to have it, you know, in case. But I’ve never had an issue with mine; I loooove my bumbo!
Clearly says not to put on an elevated surface in instructions! Some people……
Wow… I don’t even know what to say… The fact that the company is having to alter their product because people do not follow the directions and warnings of the manufacturer is asanine!
Really? It literally says, printed in black bold lettering, not for use on elevated surfaces. I’m tired of people making questionable decisions and then blaming manufacturers. People need more common sense. I remember last year the Prince Lionhart company had this big campaign about how their seats were safer, better built, bigger, cuter etc and gave you a free seat if you sent in your Bumbo to them, I mean basically bashing the Bumbo, for months this went on. While I obviously appreciate safe toys, gadgets and “equipment” for my child, I do not like companies who feel they have to put down other companies to sell their products, especially when the reason for these safety “issues” is mostly lack of common sense. You can get hurt doing anything, literally anything, most parents just need to pay more attention. My daughter loved her Bumbo seat and I made sure we were always attentive and using it properly.
I hate that Bumbo is taking the fall for this when parents should know better. If they lean over, it’s obvious just by looking at the baby in the bumbo that it’s possible they could fall over!
So don’t put them up on an elevated surface. It even says it RIGHT THERE ON THE SEAT!!!!!
agreed. i never put my child in her bumbo seat on an elevated surface because it can be dangerous! people didnt think about that? even the bouncy chairs say that!
DO NOT PUT THE BUMBO ON AN ELEVATED SURFACE!!! HOW STUPID CAN SOME PEOPLE BE? DON’T RUIN IT FOR THE REST OF US THAT LOVE THE BUMBO!
I’ve nannied and babysat my whole life. Now I’m a mom and I’ve always used the Bumbo seats! I love the Bumbo seats! Of course I use them the way they’re supposed to be used and always supervise any child using one. And I always use them on the ground never on an elevated surface. Hopefully people are following instructions and not just using them however they see fit.
Maybe we should recall the parents for making a ridiculous mistake. The bumbo seat is perfectly safe when placed on the ground. This is yet another example of naive parenting. My child loves her bumbo, and we would have been lost without it while she was learning to sit on her own! I feel for the company having to spend this extra money on a restraint kit that wouldn’t be necessary if parents paid attention to the instructions clearly printed on the packaging.
I used a hand me down Bumbo with my daughter and it never sat anywhere but on my deck or on my living room floor. It really bothers me when people don’t use their brains and put their children at risk. I hope no financial gain was had because of some parents neglect. But I do feel bad for the injured children who I can only assume were hurt because their parents didn’t think before they acted
This should be a no brainer considering it clearly says not to be used on elevated surfaces but I also think the restraint is silly because its not going to stop the seat from falling if its placed on an elevated surface. It’s sad that everything ends up with a recall because some parents can’t seem to follow directions… I love my Bumbo and see no point in sending off for the repair kit!
Wow..obviously the seats ARE NOT intended to b used on elevated surfaces..sum ppl should use common sense :-/
Maybe a baby shouldn’t be sitting up at all unless they can support themselves. These seats are ridiculous.
It says clear as day on the Bumbo itself as well as in the instructions “WARNING- Prevent Falls: Never use on any elevated surface” it’s not The Bumbo that’s the problem it’s the bimbo that refuses to pay attention to the directions or have common sense and places the seat on kitchen counters, tables, chairs etc.
And the purpose of a seatbelt would be? So it the stupid parents put their kids on elevated surfaces and leave the unattended, the repair kit will allow the child to fall off the elevated surface BUT they will still be attached to the Bumbo by the seatbelt? Really now? Who thought of this bright idea? I have one and never leave my son on any surface higher than the floor! Who does that and blame the company? Sad.
In my experience, it wasn’t that my kids fell out of the thing, it was that they managed to tip it over entirely.
A seat belt isn’t gonna fix that….
Next year: recall to add suction cups, velcro, and carriage bolts to the base to permanently affix the Bumbo seat.
It says right in the instructions not to place it on an elevated surface. It is not meant to be used as a high chair / feeding chair. You are supposed to place it on the floor. It is unfortunate that parents are not following the instructions and that kids have been injured as a result of their caregivers not following the instructions.
I agree, you should never leave your child elevated, unattended no matter what they are sitting in. It’s said that parents wont take responsiblity for their mistakes. My daughter has never ‘fallen’ out or toppled over in Her seat and that because she sits on a level surface with someone with her… It’s really sad that this company is going to lose a lot of money for this. I love our bumboo
I agree with Ashley and Alexis’s comments! How ridiculous when parents make a bad choice and do not supervise their children then sue the product company for their neglect! I have a bumbo and will not be ordering the seat belt because when my baby is in the bumbo, he is supervised…wow what a concept!
It is says on the packaging and elsewhere not to place on an elevated surface, it isn’t the product that is the problem it is parent negligence.
I know the article says about falls from elevated surfaces but I also have heard of falls out of the seat while the seat was on the ground. Babies falling out backwards because their heads are so heavy and their necks get fatigued. Granted the infants probably weren’t hurt as bad as those falling from an elevated surface.
The giant warning you can see in the picture clearly states not to leave it on an elevated surface! And the instruction book that comes with the Bumbo had it printed in a multitude of languages. Besides, are these kids actually sliding out of the seat? My tiny 3 month old gets wedged in there, so I would think kids are tipping it over. I doubt that a belt will help!
It’s been several years since I purchased ours, but I kind of remember there being a warning on the box to not put your baby on an elevated service? Poor company has had to go and issue a recall because people have no common sense? Geez.
oops, surface. autocorrect.
I am a Certified Educator of Infant Massage. In that capacity, I urge all parents of normally-developing babies to TOSS this thing!!! I strongly believe these seats should only be allowed in medical facilities and given to parents on doctor\’s orders, if they deem them necessary, and only with strictly followed procedural instructions to the parents.
As an instructor who teaches parents/caregivers how to massage their own babies, I strongly believe in the importance of starting ’tummy-time’ immediately after birth. Babies will then gradually develop the necessary strength in their arms, back and legs to roll over (back and forth), push up and eventually learn how to balance and sit WITHOUT props.
Their tiny, delicate developing spines are too important to have them slumping into a seat like this and putting unnecessary pressure on it. Your baby’s musculature needs to develop normally to hold the spinal column erect. Remember, this is where all the signals from all parts of baby’s body, including the developing organs and muscles, travel to reach the brain.
YUP …. I guess you’d say I’m pretty passionate about this.

Thank you for reading my rant.

People need to use common sense. It is not a baby sitter. And don’t leave child unattended and don’t put iit high off the ground
This is so stupid. I hate that people can be morons and endanger their own children, then blame the product when the child is hurt. The package and the seat itself has a warning that states it is not to be placed on an elevated surface or used in the bath. The parents should be taking responsibility for their own negligence, not blaming the company. I love our bumbo seat and my son is always on the floor in it and has never been hurt, our older son never got hurt when he used it since we always had it on the floor. Take responsibility for yourself, this product is perfectly safe
Its scary when u see2 the products ow actually up on the list, but i agree w a few of the comments that are already written …..It definitely has to not only do w this product but ,parents NOT reading the warning stickers&paying attn to their child when using.(in this situation anyway)Now I don’t mean EVERY1but some.its sad.
It is on the box and instructions. My daughter will be five soon and she used the seat with no injuries and my son is now using the same exact bumbo in the floor next to me. Belt will make no difference unless it has a strap on the bottom to strap it to the chair as well. The baby sticks in the chair. Parents these days are so dumb, I swear
So true it’s not the product it’s the no common sense moms and dads it really is a shame when my son fell out of the back of the our truck they didn’t recall the truck it was my fault for not watching him better and thinking he’d be okay but I was young and stupid enough blaming the products unless there is truly a defect and not a neglectful parent also that’s why they put warnings In the first place read all instructions is what it says so if you don’t then guess what your the reason your child is hurt….
Wow! You are all very judgmental for being among the prestigious club of motherhood. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye…and not always because theom or dad is neglectful. Accidents are accidents. Perhaps we should be happy that the Bumbo company is now putting restraints in their seats after all , high chairs, car seats and change tables have them. Not sayong its Bumbo’s fault im just saying some of these accidents could possibly have been prevented had they had restraints in the first place. I guess what I’m saying is stop being so quick to judge…. It could happen to you just like that!
This is ridiculous! I agree with all the previous comments. We are on baby #3 with a bumbo seat and have never had an injury – we also don’t put them anywhere but the floor! Get a clue parents, if you wouldn’t set your kid up there without the seat why would you put them there with it??
It does say on the packaging to keep off elevated surfaces. My question is how will a belt keep a child from falling off a table. The only difference this makes is that the bumbo will stay attached to the child and possibly cause more damage. It’s better to use good judgement. These should stay on the floor … no matter what!
I agree that they shouldn’t be used on elevated surfaces as the product makes very clear. However I’m not sure adding a belt will help the parents that don’t listen. It will just make the whole seat fall with the baby. Guess that means… DON’T USE ON ELEVATED SURFACES and then blame the company.
Its just common sense not to leave your baby on an elevated surface in the first place. Especially now that my 4 month old is moving a lot I wont even leave the car seat on the table anymore. He goes right on the floor when we get home. The only times I put my baby on a table in his bumbo is if I’m sitting right there watching him. Who leaves their babies on countertops?! If you need to keep your baby away from pets that bother them then maybe you should put your pets outside or in a crate! If I’m cooking in the kitchen I put him in his bumbo on the floor so he can watch me. He loves it! There are two warning signs on my bumbo it says NEVER use on elevated surface. So I guess they need to make a new warning sign because that will fix peoples stupidity…smh. And if your baby is capable of climbing out of the bumbo then I think its time to put it away. Your only supposed to use it until they can sit up by themselves.
Maybe they should only sell them to parents who can pass a simple reading test
If your baby is falling out of one of these from an elevated surface, then Darwin would say the product is doing it’s job by eliminating the weak genetic lines. Newsflash… don’t leave your baby on a table unattended! How hard is that to figure out? What other unbelievable crap is rolled into the blanket statement “elevated surface”? On the stove next to boiling pasta? Over the fireplace? On an open window sill? On top of a Margarita machine?
Be a parent. Don’t expect every item your child encounters on the way to college to have a harness, so that you can conveniently ignore them. There’s a new thing called “the floor” that is 100% compatible with the bumbo. Blankets also work with “the floor” and seem to have done the trick for thousands of years. But hey, why encourage common sense when we can just make companies liable for our stupidity by spending millions idiot proofing things that we already approved of at time of purchase?
Are they making a new one? Because I have it on my registry. Should I go ahead and take it off? lol
Why would you sit your baby in this thing anywhere other than the floor to even begin with?
And how is a strap going to make that fall any better? I don’t understand how the strap will make the child not get hurt if they push themselves over the edge of an elevated surface.
Sorry about all the typos .
I have to agree with the negligence of parents. I’ve seen many people posting pictures on facebook of their babies/ kids in bumbo seats on counters and tables. I don’t care even if you’re sitting right there, your child should not be on the table or counter. It’s not safe or right. Would you allow them to sit on the table when they are 2, 5, 10?? Parents need to be thinking of all safety procautions at all times!!! And manners! Now with this seat belt thing? Your kid can and will still fall off elevated surfaces. I’m sure instead of falling directly out of the seat, they will be taking the seat with them. Let’s be smart people!! Read all instructions/ guidelines and use your common sense!!!!
Seriously?!?! It says directly on the seat, DO NOT PLACE ON ELEVATED SURFACES. It also says not to use it in the tub etc. This recall just makes me soooo mad. I know for a fact that the Bumbo did not fracture a child’s head or injure any child in any way. What has been injuring these poor children is the parents who fail to supervise their child when they are seated in a Bumbo. I hate it when parents use items such as the Bumbo as a “babysitter” and when something happens they blame the manufacturer for something that was clearly their fault! Everyone is just always so “sue-happy”. What is going on with the world today? According to everything that is going on now, with all the recalls of everything, etc. I must have been a miracle baby along with all my friends, peers, and elders, to be able to survive a childhood with my mother using all of the baby products of then which of course have all been recalled because of “now-a-days standards”. We also survived sleeping on our stomaches and drinking cereal out of a bottle, can you imagine that?!?!
why don’t we recall the idiot mothers who put the bumbo with their kid in it on an elevated surface?
hello It states right on the bumbo not to place on elevated places. yeah so recall a good product because of people’s stupidity.
I stopped using it because when my 6 month old was in it ON THE FLOOR. He twisted his body and the whole chair tilted over. He bumped his head, nothing serious though. I put it away after that. Theseat belt probably would prevemt him from twisting around but Im in no urgency to try it. You thing the store would take it back without a receipt? (it was a shower gift) what do you think?
I’m SHOCKED that it’s made out of Polyurethane! I thought that ALL products that are to be used by children under the age of 12 yrs are supposed to be BPA Free. Polyurethane is most certainly NOT! I don’t own a Bumbo, we bought a similar type of seat that already had seat belts and a tray with toys on it. It is safer and just made sense…
You know if people would be a parent and WATCH their kids in these seats there would NOT be any injuries!! I owned one and used it with my now 11 month old. As soon as he started acting like he was going to get out of it I stopped using it simple as that and I also watched him ALL the time while he was sitting in it. Im so sick and tired of these recalls because of lack of parenting!!
I can’t believe they issued a recall for this! Don’t leave your child unattended and that would not happen! Come on people!
Completely ridiculous!!! Ok so now you’re gonna put a restraint belt on it. SO when the irresponsible parent puts baby in seat and puts baby on table, couch, counter, bed, etc….baby is now strapped into product so product falls ontop of baby……….really!!! How about people stop being so wrapped up in their lives and realize that this is a product to help keep baby off the floor, to help keep baby from getting flat spots, to help baby develop sitting up, to help baby get a different view of the world……among other uses…..IT IS SIMPLE!!! Sit on the floor with your baby and play with your kid while in the seat. When you have to walk away put baby on the floor. I tell ya…..my daughter keeps falling out of her toddler bed so should I sue the company for not putting it closer to the floor and have it recalled to? No!!!! This really sickens me!!!!
What lawyer picked this one up and made a bundle? I guess I better not pick my baby up because I do not have a safety harness attached to me! What a shame.
I have one and it works perfectly as long as it stays on the floor. If I do place it on an elevated area this means I am in front of my child feeding her and never ever leave her alone in the seat on there. Lets take responsibility for our kids please
I agree with all of the comments above. It’s not the company’s responsibility if parents aren’t supervising their children. I bought mine at Walmart and I never had a problem with my kids falling out. And I believe every trip I taken to Walmart, I seen some dumb parent put their child in a cart and not watch them and the child falls out!!! Like really,,, are they gonna put a recall on shopping carts too. It’s called neglect. If the child gets injured its mainly the parents fault for poor supervision! I love this product!!!
If people only used common sense-this wouldn’t even be an issue! You should never, ever place your child on an elevated surface when in a bumpo seat. Duh! But, I’ve seen people place them on countertops, coffee tables, etc. Just think of the potential dangers! Not sure why a perfectly good product has to be recalled because people are dumb!
What good is a restraint belt going to do if the whole thing falls off the surface? Your baby will still fall!
When my daughter was just learning to sit up we bought her one of these seats. It seemed like a great product and she loved it. The thing was that she was also starting to stand and so she’d get excited and push herself up. We never placed her on anything but the floor (carpeted) and someone was always right next to her. Still one day as she was sitting in her little chair and bouncing up and down and laughing suddenly fell over. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt, just startled, but that was the last time we used that seat. And as for the seatbelt, well considering that my daughter didn’t fall out of the chair but instead fell with the chair I don’t see how they would help much. So in our situation common sense was not lacking nor was it the problem.
Nope, it just means your kid was too big for the seat and ready to move on. So again, not the fault of the company.
I agree my daughter does the same same thing. I’m afraid she will hurt her back. I don’t leave her in it without supervision, it could only take one sec for her to hurt herself. If she wasn’t able to push herself up she wouldn’t be able to tip the bumbo. It isn’t neglect all products have restraints swings, strollers, highchairs, etc. The bumbo needs one too. My daughter started pushing herself out at 12 weeks. For 40 bucks I expected a product that last longer than 2 weeks of use.
Seriously?? Who would put their child on an elevated surface and leave them unattended??!! Parenting 101, NEVER PUT YOUR CHILD ON AN ELEVATED SURFACE WITH NO SUPERVISION!!! Whatever!! I’m keeping my bumbo seat on the floor with my child. Doesn’t matter what kind of restraints they put on it, if the child leans far enough forward, the whole seat is going to go not just the child. I agree with all above statements. Stupid people have to ruin it for the rest of us!! Boy this makes me mad!!
I LOVED MY BUMBO SEAT I USED WITH MY DAUGHTER AND ALWAYS USED ON THE FLOOR (NO BRAINER) AND AS SOON AS SHE GOT TO WHERE SHE WAS TRYING TO PUSH UP AND GET OUT OF IT WE STOPPED USING IT AND STARTED USING HER STATIONARY WALKER, SO WITH A LITTLE COMMON SINCE OUR DAUGHTER NEVER HAD ANY INJURIES DUE TO HER BUMBO… I COULD SEE HOW SOME CHILDREN COULD GET HURT IN IT (IF PLACED OFF THE FLOOR OR IS BIG ENOUGH TO TRY AND GET OUT) BUT AS LONG AS THE PARENTS ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO WHERE THEY PUT THERE BABY AND WHAT THERE CHILD IS CAPABLE OF AT THE AGE THERE TRYING TO PUT THEM IN THE BUMBO THERE CHILD SHOULD BE FINE JUST LIKE WITH ANYTHING IF THE PARENTS ARE NOT USING COMMON SINCE AND PAYING ATTENTION THEN THE BABY IS LIABLE TO GET HURT. BUT NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE DOES AND HOW SAFE THEY ARE KIDS WILL STILL GET HURT YOU CAN JUST PREVENT THE BAD ACCIDENTS (USUALLY) BY BEING SMART. I WOULD RECOMMEND THE BUMBO TO ANY MOM!
After reading everyone’s post. It makes me sad that soooo many people are quick to judge other parents and call them stupid. Everyone who has a baby is going to make mistakes at some point in their child’s life. I can almost guarantee that every single person on here has ignored directions. Not to mention not everyone agrees on how to raise a child people do what works for them because there is no “correct” way to raise a child. You should also know that baby’s have also cracked their skulls while sitting in the bumbo on the floor. Your child can get injured in any device. For example walkers/jumpers have been proven to cause a development delay with walking and serious accidents have happened while using them. Do I think parents are stupid or dumb from using one…no but I just decided not to use one. I’m mean seriously say your opinion but stop calling people stupid. Children medications and shots have multiple warnings do people still use them pretty sure they do. Encourage companies to make safe products for our children, encourage parents to listen to warnings, and make them aware of what could happen. Don’t call them stupid because some day you make make a stupid mistake too.
I owned one of these and my daughter NEVER fell out of it. Probably because A. I never placed it on an elevated surface (which the directions tell you not to do anyway), and B. never left the child unattended. I don’t know how stupid people are to have their child get injured in this chair. It baffles my mind. People need to pay attention to the directions/instructions that come with all baby products and also use some common sense to monitor your child properly.
What everyone here seems to be forgetting is that raising a child takes vigilance and work, but having a child is as easy as lying on your back for a few minutes. It’s the women who are fine with the few minutes of pleasure but not everything that comes after that file the complaints on perfectly good products. Yes, it’s common sense and even clearly stated on packaging to not put this on an elevated surface but the women doing this are typically the same ones that don’t always make the connection that babies come from having sex. So why would you think that these are normal women making rational decisions?
Any parent who uses any product for extended periods of time, in place of actually having to watch their child(ren) is going to have problems. Not because of the product(s), but because of the misuse of the products. Lets face it, the safety of baby items has greatly improved over time, but even when “walkers” looked like some type of death trap, if they were used correctly and under supervision for appropriate amounts of time, they were ok. It’s when we as parents attempt to do too much, other than attentively watch our children, that we run into trouble. Too many times we take for granted that the products will keep them busy and we will have time to do whatever it is we need/want to do. It’s when we abuse the time spent, when we expect PRODUCTS to keep our children safe- instead of us keeping them safe, when things go wrong. As parents we need to stop expecting all of the baby products to entertain our babies, we need to use them as they were intended to be used. No company out there makes products to replace parenting time, they make products to make the lives of today’s parents easier. We have a Bumbo, which always was on the floor, our son never got hurt, he never wriggled out, because we were there with him each and every time we put him in it. We started putting him in the Bumbo at three months, again, always supervised, he was sitting on his own in no time, it helped him learn to use those muscles. All three of my kids also had walkers, each of them were in their walker by five or six months old, they were all walking, even running well before their 1st birthdays. My oldest, who is 13 now took his first steps at 7 months, my second who is now 8 took her first steps at 8 months, and my youngest who just turned 1, took his first steps right after his 10 month mark, all of them used walkers. If you use products the way they were intended, as a help to you or the baby, then many things can be very useful. If you take advantage of the use or misuse the products, anything can become harmful or dangerous. A spoon is a very simple product that most everyone uses, all over the world. However, if you give it to an infant too young to know how to properly use it, it can cause the child to choke, vomit, scratch the child’s throat, cause damage to they eyes or ears, nose, where ever they figure to put it. That doesn’t mean spoons should be recalled, or that there should be some warning label on all spoons, we should just know better than to just give it to an infant. Items that are used incorrectly can be and probably WILL be dangerous. But we as supposedly able, knowledgeable, competent parents need to act accordingly and make choices that are smart for our selves and our children instead of choices that seems to be more convenient for us. ( I’ll step off my soap box now, thank you.)
FYI, there have been numerous reports of babies falling or bucking out even when placed on the floor and not elevated. Skull fractures are nothing to mess with. Throw this seat out!
The bumbo falling off an elevated surface is a danger but there are other dangers of this seat. Babies that do not have the head/neck/spine strength to sit upright are being placed in this thing all slumped over. That is not good! Also, these are not hip healthy. The seat locks a baby’s legs and hips into an unnatural position. These seats are a hazard in more ways than one. I don’t see how parents can mold their baby into this unnatural seat and think it is good for them?! Yes, it is nice to plop a baby in here so you can cook or do chores but please use common sense!!!
People who report cases that their baby got injured with bumbo seat are stupid. Why? It is clearly said
Warning: Never use on a raised surface; never use as a car seat or bath seat, designed for floor level use only. Godness: what’s your eye for if you do not read. I own one. If there is a camera button here, I’ll take the picture of the warning sign.
