I was just advising my sister in law this same thing! It's important to know what you want but not to be rigid about it as you just never know how you'll feel or what will happen when you're in delivery. For me, I really wanted an epidural and to be like the moms on The Baby Story that didn't even know when they had to push. Instead I got a practically natural birth when my epidural ran out long before it was time to push and no one came to turn it back up!

My birth plan was pretty much try to go naturally with as few interventions as possible, and if it was too much I'd ask for something, but no epidurals. With my first child I ended up being induced 3 weeks early because they were concerned with his low weight. It was scary because I couldn't control what was going on. The pitocin in didn't really work and after 8 hours of nothing my midwife gave me the option to break my water or start over with the pitocin and if it didn't work I would need to have a c-section. After she broke my water my contractions started right up. 4 hours later Luke was born. I did end up getting a dose of fentanyl but all that mattered was that my little bot got here healthy and safe.

With my second child I had the same plan: try to go natural with no interventions. Well I got my wish but not quite how I pictured it. I woke up at 4:20 feeling uncomfortable so I got up. My husband woke up an hour later and we decided to get ready and take our 19 month old to the neighbors house. We called the midwife on call who told me to take a bath and then drive the hour to the hospital. My husband was beginning to take everything to the neighbors when we thought we might not make the trip so we called the midwife back and she said we would make it and to head down. By this time my contractions were really picking up but still not regular and mu husband was frantically running back and fourth across the street. When I realized it would be better to go to the hospital in town. Minutes later my husband was trying to convince me to go/ drag me to the car. Then I told my husband to call 911 because this baby was coming now! He called at 6:40 and soon we had 2 policemen were standing in our bedroom. Then my husband asks "Have you ever seen a baby crowning?" yes was the reply. "do you want to come look?" was his next question! To me it sounded like an invite for them to come look at my lady parts but he claims he wanted to make sure that's what was happening. He still didn't believe me that the baby was coming NOW! Thankfully they declined. He kept telling me not to push (as if I had a choice!) and he grabbed a towel and got ready to catch. Then the EMTs arrived and Kjerstin was born in our bathroom 2 minutes later at 6:47. It was super intense and pretty scary for Jason and I did get my natural labor, but most important she was healthy!
