When Will My Baby’s Eyes Change Color?
Photo by: Gloria RubioIn high school, I learned about genes by studying eye color. One’s inheritance of big B’s and little b’s determine whether their eyes will be light or dark. It was all so simple! I assumed my babies’ eye color would be just as straightforward — my husband and I both have dark eyes. But it’s always fun to imagine your baby as the exception to the rule, and I wonder if it’s possible that at least one of my children will defy the oversimplified high school science explanation of genetics. After all, my mother comes from a German and English background and has blue eyes, and while my father’s Mexican heritage shows through in our darker coloring, we both have green and blue-eyed siblings. My husband, however, is also Hispanic and has no light eyed relatives that he can think of — no blue, gray or even hazel.
When the twins were born, baby girl’s eyes were darker and are now definitely brown. Baby boy on the other hand, has humored us with his fickle eye color. At two months old, his eyes are definitely lighter than his sister’s, but the color is very ambiguous and seems to complement whatever outfit he’s wearing. Experts now believe that eye color stabilizes around six months of age, but some people experience changes later on, like my cousin, whose eyes turned from blue to green in elementary school. Of course, both my babies are adorable regardless of their eye color! But it is fun to watch these changes develop as my children grow.
When did your baby’s eyes change color? Were you surprised by the outcome?

My husband and I both have dark brown eyes and our little boy as very blue eyes. He’s 6 months old now and they are still blue. I read that they can change up to 9 months. It will be a little strange if they do change. We will have all these baby pictures of him with very blue eyes. Surely, it will take a little getting used to I imagine. We will see.
baby boys parents have brown eyes but baby boy has relatives (both great grandpa’s on maternal side have blue & green eyes. Not sure eye colors on paternal side) but so far baby boy still has blueish-green eyes and he is now 8 months old..
my husband has green eyes and they change color to compliment what he’s wearing, my eyes are dark brown. our two month old has the most beautiful blue eyes. it’s weird cause sometimes they’re blue and at other times they’re like a dark gray-blue! so, we are waiting to see what color she finally ends up with.

My LO’s eyes changed colors well past one year, which is a little out of the ordinary. She had blue for a while, then green, and then around 1 1/2 turned brown. My husband has blue eyes and I have brown, so I was a little sad to finally see them go brown (my mom has green, so there was some hope). So, it can be a while until they are even the color and not just the shade. Although I read, that most of the time color is set around 9 months and the shade can change over time. It’s such a fun thing to watch.
My 5 month old daughter has light brown eyes right now. When she was first born, her eyes were grey, now they are a pretty brown. Her sperm donor has greenish hazel eyes and I have dark brown, but about 1-2 months ago, her pediatrician said her eyes have a gene in them that only people with blue eyes have and they may turn blue after she is 6 months. I am very excited to see if they will!
