Mom Gets Unbelievably Awesome Surprise From Waitress for Breastfeeding in Public
Score one for breastfeeding!
News broke the other day that a mama in Des Moines, Iowa got a super-sweet treat from her dinner waitress at a local pizzeria for nursing her child in public. Jackie Johnson-Smith was out to dinner with her husband and fussy baby. Jackie said she originally started feeding at the table and then moved outside so as not to disrupt other restaurant goers. Her husband was waiting to pay the bill when their dinner waitress left a shocking, heartening note on the receipt.
The Johnson-Smith’s were floored by the waitress’ random act of kindness. Jackie even posted a picture of the note on her Facebook page:
So far, the post received 107 likes and over 2,900 shares!
She posted a comment along with the note that read, “I have breastfed three children… I have breastfed them in countless of places both pleasant and unpleasant, discreetly and out in the open. I have gotten many looks and stares, but tonight erases any negativity I have ever received. I ate at Fongs for the first time tonight. Having a fussy baby I nursed him for awhile in the booth and eventually left the table early as to not disrupt the restaurant. The waitress gave this receipt to my husband. I was speechless and emotional. Although I don’t need a pat on the back for feeding my child, it sure felt amazing. It is amazing how we women can make each other feel when we empower each other.” After 663 comments, the overwhelmed mama posted on her own picture, “Let’s make this wonderful experience common place and make all nursing mamas feel accepted wherever their nurslings need them.”
Their waitress, Bodi Kinney, was interviewed by a local newspaper. Her decision to pick up the tab on one of the family’s pizzas, she said, was about standing together as women and moms. “It’s kind of a taboo and society kind of frowns upon it,” she told the KCCI. We need to come together and support each other when it comes to nursing our children.” And she’s 100 percent right.
No matter if you’re a woman, a mom or a breastfeeding advocate, it’s important to stand together and embrace, support and empower each other. Perhaps if there were a few more instances of this, society would get the message and breastfeeding in public wouldn’t be such a taboo!
Want to get involved in the breastfeeding movement?
August is National Breastfeeding Month and for such an amazing cause, we created a campaign at The Bump that’s all about spreading the word that breastfeeding moms should be able to feed their babies whenever and wherever they need to! Mark your calendar. August 15 is now officially Public Display of Breastfeeding (PDB) day! If you’re shy, you’re going to have to leave some of your modesty at home, because we want you to (you guessed it) nurse your baby out in the open. Let everyone see that you’re proud to be a breastfeeding mama! Moms everywhere will be doing it!
Take the pledge and join the boob-olution! We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
