Kristen Bell Says She Won’t Hide Sex From Her Daughter — Will You?

Proud mama Kristen Bell is totally a tell-it-like-she-sees-it kind of woman and as a mom, her motto is totally the same. So when she took to the Chelsea Lately show to dish on her parenting views, we weren’t really all that surprised with how she plans to juggle her racy career in TV and movies with how she and husband Dax Shepard parent.

She told the TV host that sweet baby Lincoln can “watch whatever she wants.” Sound surprising? We thought so too, but she backed it up with, “People ask, ‘Oh, well you’ve done some sexy material. Do you not want her to see that?’ And I’m like, ‘My guess is if she’s anything like the other 5 billion people on the planet, she’s gonna grow up and enjoy sex, so I’m not gonna be shocked by that.’” While we’re not huge fans of little Linc watching her mom (or dad) get it on on the big screen in front of friends and classmates, Kristen’s honest take on the adult pleasures (sorry, but could you blame me?) her daughter will one day come to enjoy are incredibly refreshing.

“I just think you’re setting yourself up for disaster if you try to keep them little,” Kristen says, “She’s gonna grow up. She has — newsflash! — a vagina, and she’s gonna figure it out one day, and more power to her.” And she’s right. You won’t stay nine months and adorably chubby forever. The months will turn to years and the adorable chub that your mom and dad and uncles and cousins once lovingly tugged on will turn into love handles. We grow up. It’s inevitable.

And though her views on sex and child rearing feel totally progressive (and honestly, maybe too much for some new mothers), opening the door and being honest about what it’s like to be a woman (and what the hell is going on down there) are really important for Lincoln and all little girls to hear.  Of course, we’re not saying that little girls should get the sex talk when they’re two, but when the time is right — and reasonable — it makes sense that Kristen endow her daughter with all the encouragement and empowerment young girls so desperately need today.

Bell’s way of parenting isn’t for everyone, but isn’t that the beauty of being a mother? You get to do the very best job for your children and hope that somewhere along the way, they apply the lessons and the teaching. It’s better than walking into a room with the lights completely out.

Did your views on parenting change once you had children?
