We know that babies born pre-term might be at risk for developmental problems, but now new research shows that babies born just two weeks early could have problems too. The study published in Pediatrics, “Academic Achievement Varies With Gestational Age Among Children Born at Term,” showed that full-term babies do better on math and reading tests.

Researchers analyzed over 128,000 babies born between 37 and 41 weeks gestation in New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When the children took their 3rd grade math and reading tests, researchers found that scores for children born at 37 and 38 weeks were lower than the kids born at 39, 40 or 41 weeks. They found that children born at 37 weeks had a 23 percent increased risk of having a reading impairment and children born at 38 weeks had a 13 percent increased risk, as opposed to those born at 41 weeks. Plus, math scores were lower for these children as well.

Experts believe that because baby’s brain has substantial growth during the last weeks of gestation, an early birth can disrupt that development. Of course, most women can’t control when they give birth, so this shouldn’t freak you out too much. But for women who are electing to have c-sections or inductions (and it’s not an emergency), this new research might make them want to wait a few more weeks.

Do you think full-term babies could be smarter? When was your baby born?

The thought of delivery is kind of nerve-wracking, right? Especially if it’s your first pregnancy. But you might want to work through your fears if you want the process to happen faster. A new study in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that women who have a fear of childbirth might spend more time in labor.

The Norwegian study analyzed data on 2,206 women who were set to give birth vaginally and weren’t expecting multiples. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, the women took the Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire to measure their fear of childbirth. Women were classified with a fear if they scored over an 85. Of the women assessed, 165 scored high enough to be considered fearful. The average labor for those women was eight hours, while the women who didn’t have a fear took an average of 6.46 hours.

It was also found that women who had a fear of childbirth were more likely to have an emergency c-section and instrumental vaginal delivery, compared to women who didn’t have a fear. Of the total number of pregnant women, 25.5% who had a fear and 44.4% who didn’t have a fear had a successful vaginal delivery. But there’s good news for the fearful women: 89% of those who intended to give birth vaginally did actually go through with it.

Researchers believe that stress and communication with hospital staff might be a factor in delivery times. Researchers believe that these findings will help obstetricians and midwives offer the extra support to patients who are particularly scared of giving birth.

Big celebrity couple news: power couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, according to PEOPLE. The couple wed in November 2006 and had their daughter, Suri (who’s now six years old), in April 2006.

So now that they’re divorcing, who gets custody of Suri? After Tom Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman, their children Connor and Isabella lived in LA with Tom with Nicole visiting every now and then. Nicole talked to her Hello! magazine about her kids in 2010, “They live with Tom, which was their choice. I’d love them to live with us, but what can you do?” But, we do always see Suri and Katie running errands or having mother-daughter bonding time, so maybe she’ll live with Katie. TMZ reports that Katie (who filed for divorce) wants sole custody of Suri and “primary residential custody.”

Katie’s lawyer told PEOPLE, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

We hope Tom and Katie will keep their divorce amicable for Suri’s sake!

What do you think of Tom and Katie’s divorce? Are you surprised by the news?

You might want to take breaks every now and then if you’re standing a lot during pregnancy. A new study, published online in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that women who spent long amounts of time on their feet at work during pregnancy had babies whose heads were 1 centimeter smaller and weights were 148 and 198 grams smaller than average at birth. Researchers looked at the growth of fetuses in 4,680 moms between 2002 and 2006. The women were asked about their working conditions in the middle of their pregnancies. Their babies were routinely measured during their pregnancy and after birth.

Half the women who stood a lot in their jobs worked 25-39 hours a week, while one in four worked more than 40 hours a week. Of those women, the ones who worked more than 40 hours a week had smaller babies.

While standing for long periods of time seemed to have affected the babies, long working hours and physically demanding work did not. The researchers also found that there were no negative effects to working until 36 weeks pregnant. Of course, if women work long hours and do a lot of heavy lifting or moving, they should take frequent breaks and move around. If you’re sitting too much, get up and walk around. If you’re standing, make sure to sit down once in a while.

If you’re thinking about going through fertility treatments, you might need to do it multiple times to actually conceive. A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women in their 30s and 40s who had fertility treatments were as likely to deliver babies as women who conceived naturally — it just sometimes takes repeated cycles of the the fertility procedure. Researchers looked at all IVF cycles together, rather than the live birth rate after one treatment cycle. By adding those together, they found that there is hope for women undergoing multiple treatments.

The study looked at 246,740 women who went through assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment between 2004 and 2009. Of the women, 57 percent of them gave birth through treatment and 30 percent of all ART cycles resulted in a live birth. Researchers took into account factors like age and quality of embryos.

For women under 31 who went through ART, the birth rate was 42 percent for the first cycle and the by the fourth cycle, the rate was 66-83 percent. For women 43 and older, the birth rate using her own embryos was 4 percent for the fourth cycle and 7-15 percent for the fourth cycle. If older women used donor eggs, they would have a significantly greater chance of having a live birth. Researchers said the the chances of conceiving naturally are 45 percent for the first month, 65 percent at the six-month mark and 85 percent at a year.

Would you undergo multiple fertility treatments? What do you think of these findings?

This morning, the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), ruling that it is, in fact, constitutional. The health care law seeks to extend health insurance to millions of Americans, but it also contains a controversial mandate that requires all individuals who aren’t covered by an employer or government-sponsored insurance plan to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty fee.

-No insurance? You’ll pay higher taxes. The mandate requiring everyone to have health insurance will exist as a tax. So if you refuse to obtain health insurance, you might end up paying a higher tax.

-It’s no biggie if you or someone in your family has a chronic condition. If you have a pre-existing condition, you’ll be able to receive health insurance and you won’t have to pay more because of your health history. And yes, your employer is required to provide you with health insurance.

-Low on funds? You’ll get help. If you’re having trouble financially, the government will help you pay for health care. You’ll get free coverage if you earn up to 133% of the federal poverty level. And if you earn 133% to 400%, you’ll be eligible for federal aid so you can buy coverage.

-Goodbye gender rating. In some states, women have to pay more for insurance than men. With the ACA, everyone will pay an equal amount.

What do you think of the health care ruling? How do you think it will affect your family?

According to Us Weekly, the couple will welcome twins this fall. And this isn’t the first set of twins for the cast of the hit show, Sam Trammell (who plays Sam Merlotte) is already dad to 11-month-old twins, Winston and Gus. Trammell told Us about the advice he’s given to his co-stars, “It’s harder, having twins, but it’s all we know. So we’re trying to impart some decent wisdom. I told them to hold on tight!”

Congrats Anna and Stephen! We can’t wait to see what they name their babies.

Fertility drugs will help you get pregnant faster, but they also might make your children shorter. A new study presented at The Endocrine Society’s Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, found that of babies born full term, those that were conceived through fertility drugs were a little bit shorter than naturally conceived children, but were overall healthy.

Experts in this study wanted to see the difference between mothers who used fertility drugs and those who had undergone fertility treatments like IVF. Previous studies have shown that IVF children were actually taller than naturally-conceived children. This time around, the researchers looked at 84 children conceived with the help of fertility drugs and 258 children who were conceived naturally — all of them were born full term. It was found that the kids conceived through fertility drugs were an average of two centimeters shorter — even when the researchers took parents’ height into consideration. They also found that the height difference was greater in boys than it was in girls.

Researchers are still unsure what could be the cause of these findings and need to investigate further.

Do you think fertility drugs could affect height? Is having a tall kid important to you?
