The very pregnant Kim Kardashian set sail for Paris (she called it her “final trip” before she can’t fly anymore via Twitter) with mama Kris Jenner in tow. The girls, sans Kim’s boyfriend, Kanye West, took in the sights and sounds around the darling city. But just because the reality TV star was abroad didn’t mean there wasn’t any time for shopping — or stocking up on baby items! She said on her personal blog that she and her mom “were doing some baby shopping and checking on our place here before heading to LA for a while.” So what exactly did the mama-to-be scoop up on her trip?

Looks like our girl Kim was in full on nesting mode. The duo reportedly stumbled into Ovale, a high-end baby boutique in Paris that’s specifically known for its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on baby’s gender (and on leaking news to the press). The boutique specializes in gender-neutral clothing — lots of whites, ivories and creams! — and only fitting, it comes with a high price-tag.

Kim eyed Ovale’s chic selection of mini silvery jewelry (again, no hints as to whether it’s gems for baby boy or baby girl West) and this plush, oversized and handmade teddy bear. Not that I’m at all against the white decor, but here’s hoping Kim has a heavy duty washer! Babies are not known for their clean habits — just their cute ones!

Here’s the teddy that Kim was reportedly eying:

And it’ll be absolutely perfect for the many mornings, afternoons and pre-bedtime play occasions that Kim, Yeezy and Kimbryo will have together! Hope Kim specifically ordered it right then and there, because it looks like the item has since sold out on the boutique’s online store.

Are you surprised Kim is nesting?

Everyone knows that lots of pregnant women experience the nesting instinct, right? The urge to cook, clean, or decorate the baby’s nursery that kicks in as she approaches her due date? Well, that’s not exactly how it happened with me.

Apparently my nesting instinct turned me into a senior citizen, because I found myself very pregnant and completely obsessed – for the first time in my life – with knitting, sewing, and scrap-booking.

I didn’t get very far with the knitting, despite my mother-in-law’s best efforts to teach me. The click-clack of the knitting needles was comforting, but I kept zoning out and forgetting what stitch I was on, resulting in all sort of knots and dropped stitches. I ended up with one very skinny scarf and something that could be a potholder… for a doll.

Sewing went a little better. My mother, a skilled quilter, would have loved to teach me but she lives in another state. So I stopped by a local fabric store and found someone to show me the ropes. Er, threads. Do you know who hangs around fabric stores during the day? Senior citizens.

Luckily for me this one lady, Irene, was willing to take a break from sewing her granddaughter’s princess costume to help me make a quilt for my baby. Three colors, three rows of squares — nothing fancy. I could tell Irene was disappointed I didn’t go for any embroidery or tufts or pleats or anything but truth be told, I found sewing kind of boring. I was happy to let Grandma take over.

Next, I moved on to scrap-booking. Or rather, designing my baby’s birth announcements. I’m more comfortable with paper and ink than yarn and fabric, anyway. So I set about gathering card stock and pastel ribbons and hole-punches shaped like baby footprints. Martha Stewart had nothing on me!

I didn’t know my baby’s gender or name yet, so that put a slight damper on the project, but no matter. That didn’t stop me from designing a half-dozen different baby announcements with the name (and date and weight and photo) left blank. Then once the baby was born I could barely find the time to stamp the envelopes.

It’s a good thing my baby was finally born – 10 days late – or I don’t know what project I would’ve taken on next. Making elaborate Jell-O molds? Macramé? Shuffleboard? Whatever it was, I’m sure Irene and her friends could have taught me a thing or two.

Did you experience an out-of-control nesting instinct?

Birds do it, and so do cats, apes, and other mammals preparing for birth. Nesting is an instinctual mechanism that prepares your “empty nest” to become full and quite busy for the next 18 years. Nesting is like spring-cleaning on steroids. Organization, cleanliness, and preparation are top priority. Now it’s time to clear some more space for your soon-to-be bundle of joy. If you get hit with the nesting instinct as you’re preparing for birth, make the most of it now, before life becomes so hectic that when the baby arrives even finding a moment to take a shower can be challenging.

Here’s a bunch of last-minute details that you’ll want to check off your list before going into labor, so you can put your mind and ease and relax before the big day. Mama-to-be’s, make sure you:

1. Prep Your Essentials

For such little creatures, babies need so much. They go through more clothes, diapers, and creams than you can imagine. Stock up on baby soap, cotton pads, a rectal digital thermometer, rubbing alcohol, a nasal syringe, nail clippers, BPA-free bottles, nipples, and more. And for you, pick up plenty of super-absorbent maxi pads, witch hazel, Tucks medicated pads, and ice packs (not the kinds of things you want to run out of in the middle of the night).

2. Cook in Quantity

If your nesting instinct is accompanied by an obsession with cooking, take advantage and get your meal prep on. Make extra servings of your favorite freezer-friendly foods. Make soups, bake muffins, prep hot cereals and stews, and then store in single-meal containers in the freezer, clearly marked. You’ll be especially grateful to come home to homemade meals and snacks after spending time in the birth center or hospital!

3. Do Laundry

Wash your towels, duvet cover, pillow shams, throw rugs, guest sheets, and anything else that needs a once-over before the baby arrives. Use an alternative to hefty chemical detergents. I like Dapple products because they con- tain eco-friendly formulas that are safe for your family and the environment. If you live in a place where you don’t have access to laundry, consider hiring a laundry service to take care of your needs for the first six weeks until you get into a rhythm. Stock up on your preferred detergent and cleaning solutions because you will be washing lots and lots of little onesies, pajamas, and receiving blankets.

4. Load Up Your Pantry

Stock up on staples like it’s going out of style—because it is. You won’t be doing the shopping once the baby arrives; you won’t have time. It’s all about keeping it healthy and convenient. Think nuts—the perfect nutrient- dense nibbler—trail mix, quinoa, and broths for easy soups. Other goods to get as you prepare for birth: whole-grain crackers, canned beans, brown rice, and healthy sauces.

5. Order Birth Announcements

You can get these online or at a stationery store, so they’re ready to go as soon as you know the final baby stats. And address the envelopes now so they’re ready to be stuffed and mailed. A great and easy way to announce baby’s birth- Pingg.com they have a variety of designs and you don’t have to bother with postage unless you really want to.

6. Restock Your Refrigerator

Out with the old, in with the new! Throw away any outdated items and shop for fresh ones. Stock up on foods for breastfeeding that you’ll want to have on hand once the baby has arrived—filtered water, fruits, veggies, hummus, prewashed salad greens, and so on. Make it easy on yourself and order your groceries online.

7. Spring into Clean Mode

You know the spring-cleaning that you’re always putting off until next fall? Whatever the season, now’s the time to tackle it while your nesting instinct is in full swing. Wipe down the windowsills and blinds, wash the floors, and vacuum under the couch and between the cushions—you may find a nice chunk of change while you’re at it! Be sensible in your quest for cleanliness: call in a team of friends, blast some good dance music, and get moving. Use chemical- free cleaning solvents. I love the Mrs. Meyer’s brand and Honest Company. Don’t push yourself if you’re pooped. Instead, push someone else, like your partner. Stay as close to the floor as possible. In fact, hanging out on hands and knees scrubbing the floors Cinderella-style is not a bad idea. The position helps to open up your pelvis and the hip swaying encourages your baby to move down into the pelvic outlet.

8. Style Baby

Don’t overbuy while you prepare for birth, but make sure you’re well stocked on those newborn essentials (T-shirts, onesies, sweaters, receiving blankets, and booties). Prewash baby’s outfits so there are plenty of things for her to wear. If you haven’t had a baby shower—put together a registry online to get all the basics and beyond.

9. Style Mama

Get fitted for the big day and postpartum. Buy adjustable nursing bras as well as nursing pads and easy-open (nursing) shirts. And stock up on soft, cotton, full- back underwear. Your thong days are over for a bit my friend. You’ll need big bloomer action for the first few weeks after the birth. Don’t go for the expensive undies here, as they may become stained with blood and discharge that will likely not wash away. Plan on tossing the granny panties about eight weeks postpartum. For pushing, you might try Pretty Pushers, a stylish affordable gown designed for labor and delivery.

10. Make a Who-to-Call Contact List

Set up the list now, so your birth coach and partner know whom to inform of your new arrival. You can use it later to e-mail your birth announcement to your whole list. You can also set up a call chain, where you enlist five people who call five people who call another five people, and the information gets disseminated quickly and effectively.

While some may pleasantly call it “nesting”, nesting seems anything but pleasant at times. In fact, it can feel more like chaos. Warning, dads: Be prepared for some major changes.

What type of changes, you ask? Well, you know that sink faucet that has been dripping since you purchased your home? That dripping may soon become the LOUDEST sound in the world and must be fixed RIGHT THIS INSTANT because it might wake up baby. Everywhere you and your wife will look you’ll be thinking about how and what will to change and fix to make things easier when baby arrives.

As a husband and expectant daddy, I say, just go get the tools, and start oiling the hinges, tightening the screws, replacing light bulbs. Do whatever you can to help get the house in order. Additionally, it can help to sit down with your wife and make a list of all the things that need “fixing” in the next nine months — then, as soon as you have a list, get to work. Nine months will pass by like the blink of an eye.

The best you can do as a new daddy-to-be is to just go along for the ride. We recently welcomed our third baby, our daughter Tessa, into the world and we went through the nesting process all over again. (See, nesting never ends!) Of course it helped that I had already fixed the leaky faucet and the creaky garage door during the nesting period prior to our two son’s arrivals; however, there was still plenty to accomplish.

During my wife’s first pregnancy, she wanted to have the nursery painted during her nesting phase. We set it all up and shortly after the painters arrived we had to call-off the painting project as the smell was bothering my wife. This time around, we used special paint and booked a hotel for a couple of nights while the room was painted and the paint dried – it was a much smoother transition, and the nursery looks great, too.

Along with the cleaning the house for baby, nesting also includes getting your finances in order, buying gear and necessities for the new baby, and going to unlimited baby and pregnancy classes. Like I said in the beginning, nesting is not always pleasant, but it’s an important stage for both expectant mommy and daddy.

Be patient and tackle projects as you’re able to.

Does your partner’s nesting drive you crazy? Do you like getting ready for baby?

In the process of decorating baby’s nursery? Try this tip from user Surprise3rd, who posted on our 3rd Trimester message board.

Before you place the crib in the room, Surprise3rd suggests testing the set-up by cracking the door to baby’s room by about an inch and peeking in. “Whatever portion of the room you can see [from the door] is where you should put the crib,” she says. “That way, you can easily crack the door to check on them.”

Surprise3rd says that she didn’t do this right away with her first child, but “I ended up moving the crib, because as they get older, opening the door all the way and walking in to check on them can wake them up,” she says. “If you can just crack the door open to peek, they don’t even notice!”

Tell us, will you try this idea? What other tips do you have for checking on baby without waking them up?
