The CPSC just announced a voluntary recall of the Jeep Liberty Strollers by Kolcraft due to the fact that the inner tube of the tire on the stroller can rupture, which would cause the wheel rim to fracture and fly off. So far, 96,000 strollers in the United States have been recalled and 510 in Canada.

Here’s what you need to know:

The recall includes Jeep Liberty branded strollers with model numbers starting with: JL031, JL032, JL034, JL035 and JL036. They were manufactured between June 2010 and September of 2011. The model number and date of manufacture are printed on a white tag on the rear upper center of each seatback pad. Each stroller has three-wheels and were sold in different color combinations with a metal black and silver frame, including a green seat and canopy; a gray seat and canopy with a teal blue stripe across the center of the canopy; an orange seat and canopy with a tan stripe; a tan seat and canopy with yellow stripe across the center top of the canopy; and a tan seat and canopy with an orange canopy rim. The word “Jeep” is printed on the side of the stroller and on the front of the stroller tray. There is a plastic red toy steering wheel, ignition key and orange shift lever mounted on a yellow base attached to the stroller tray.

Important to note: If your stroller wheels have a gray triangle located on the rim at the valve stem, then your stroller wheels are not included in this recall.

To date, Kolcraft and the CPSC have received 39 reports of inner tube ruptures, which have caused the wheel to fly off. Of the noted reports, 18 of the incidents included injuries. So far, 14 injuries have been sustained while parents or caregivers were trying to fill the tire with air. Two children have cuts on their chin or leg while standing near the stroller and 16 adults have received cuts, contusions and/or lacerations to their arms, legs, stomachs, heads and faces.

What to do if you have the recalled product:

Stop using it immediately. The CPSC advises that you contact Kolcraft to receive free replacement wheels. In the meantime, you can use a manual bicycle pump to inflate stroller tires to a maximum of 30 p.s.i. Do not use gas station air pumps to inflate stroller tires. Kolcraft strollers were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Sears and Toys ‘R Us nationwide, onlnie and at other mass market retailers between June 2010 and June 2013 for between $150 and $180.

A new study published in the journal BMJ Open says that pregnant women can drink up to one glass of wine a day without harming their child’s neurodevelopment.

In Britain, University of Bristol researchers recruited nearly 7,000 ten-year-old children to undergo a 20-minute assessment that tested their dynamic balance — both walking on a beam and static balance, including standing on one leg with boys eyes open and then with both closed. Seventy percent of the children’s mothers, whose alcohol consumption had been monitored at both 18 weeks of pregnancy and then again after birth, had not hand any alcohol while pregnant. One if four of the mothers of the children tested had consumed small amounts of alcohol (what they categorized as about one glass a week or three to seven glasses a week). About one in 20 mothers drank more than that and one in seven of the mothers drank four or more glasses at any one point.

The findings from the study showed that higher total alcohol consumption before and after pregnancy was associated with better performance by the children, particularly when it came to static balance. The recent research supports an earlier study published in April that found that pregnant women who drank small amounts of alcohol — about one glass a week — were not likely doing any harm to their children. A Professor at the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, John Macleod, said, “Low to moderate alcohol consumption did not seem to interfere with a child’s ability to balance for any of the three components assessed,” but he was also careful to note that, “moderate alcohol intake was a marker for social advantage, which may itself be the key factor in better balance, possibly overriding subtle harmful effects of moderate alcohol use.”

While studies both in the past and more recently have come forward with findings supporting the fact that moms-to-be can have one glass of wine without harming their baby’s development, it continues to be a hot topic debate for so many. Research continues to show that the affect on baby years after birth is virtually nonexistent, as well as baby’s neurological abilities are better, but I still think it’s a hard sell for moms-to-be.

Would you feel comfortable having a class of wine a day while pregnant?

Yesterday, the CPSC announced three separate baby bath seat recalls at the following retailers: Buy Buy Baby recalled their Idea Baby Bath Seats, Chelsea & Scott recalled Idea Baby Bath Seats, and BeBeLove recalled their baby bath seats. Here’s what you need to know:

Buy Buy Baby Idea Baby Bath Seat Recall:

The CPSC recalled 34,000 Idea Baby Bath Seats sold at Buy Buy Baby because the bath seats failed to meet federal safety standards, which included the requirements for stability. More specifically, the bath seats can tip over, posing a risk of drowning to babies. So far, no incidents have been reported. The Idea Baby Bath Seat is designed for children five to ten months old, made of pink or blue plastic and has four suction cups on the bottom. An oval-shaped arm rail runs from the front of the seat to the back and connects two side posts and the seat front. There are two star-shaped spinning toys on the front of the seat rail, above the front post. In between the two spinning toys is a round, inset plastic dis with the words “www.ideababy.com,” “Idea Baby” and “Made in Italy.”

What to do if you own the Idea Bath Seat:

The CPSC advises you stop using the product immediately if you own the recalled seats. If you’ve purchased them at a Buy Buy Baby store (or online), you can return the product to the store and receive store credit. If you’ve purchased the seat through Bed Bath & Beyond, you can return the seat to the store to receive store credit as well. The seats were sold in stores and online at BuyBuyBaby.com and BedBathBeyond.com from September of 2013 through April of 2013 for roughly $40.

Chelsea & Scott Idea Baby Bath Seat Recall:

The CPSC recalled 1,950 Idea Baby Bath Seats sold exclusively at OneStepAhead.com because the bath seats failed to meet federal safety standards, which included the requirements for stability. The bath seats can tip over, which poses a drowning risk for babies. So far, no incidents have been reported. The recall includes the Idea Baby brand infant bath seats made for One Step Ahead, made for children five to ten months old. The seat is made of white plastic with blue trim and has four suction cups on the bottom. An oval-shaped arm rail runs from the seat back and connects two side posts and the seat front post. In the front, two star-shaped spinning toys are above the front post. The disc says, “www.onestepahead.com,” “One Step Ahead,” “Idea Baby” and “Made in Italy.”

What to do if you own the Idea Bath Seat made exclusively for One Step Ahead:

The CPSC advises that you stop using the recalled product immediately. Contact Chelsea & Scott for further instructions and to receive a full refund. The product was sold at OneStepAhead.com from February 2013 through May 2013 for roughly $40.

BeBeLove Baby Bath Seats Recall:

The CPSC recalled 5,600 BeBeLove bath seats because they failed to meet federal safety standards, including the requirements for stability. The bath seats can tip over, posing a risk of drowning to babies. So far, no incidents have been reported. The recall includes all BeBeLove E-Zee™ Bath Seats: they are plastic bath seats designed for children between five and ten months old. They have a white base with suction cups on the bottom, a back/arm support, a detachable back support bar that folds under the seat for storage and a detachable T-bar front stabilizer that folds forward for entry. The back/arm support is gray, blue or pink. “Made in Taiwan” and “BBL” are engraved on the underside of the seat base and “BeBeLove” is printed on a sticker in the center of the back/arm support.

According to the results of a new study put together by a team of Dutch researchers, women with low risk pregnancies who choose to give birth at home have a lower risk of suffering from severe complications when compared to women who planned a hospital birth.

The study, performed in the Netherlands (which has the highest percentage of home births assisted by a primary care midwife), tested whether low risk women at the onset of labor with a planned home birth had a higher rate of rare but severe outcomes (known as SAMM — severe acute maternal morbidity) than those with planned hospital births. Researchers defined SAMM as: admission to an intensive care unit, uterine rupture, eclampsia major obstetric hemorrhage, postpartum hemorrhage and manual removal of the placenta. Using data collected from a national study on maternal morbidity and the national birth registry data taken from August 2004 to 2006, researchers identified over 146,000 low risk women in primary care at the onset of labor.

Of the 146,000 women in the study, 92,333 women had a planned home birth and 54,419 had opted for a planned hospital birth. For women giving birth to their first baby, the rate of severe outcomes for a planned home birth was 2.3 per 1,000, compared to 3.1 per 1,000 for a planned hospital birth. The rate of postpartum hemorrhage was 43.1 for ever 1,000 women compared to 43.3 for every 1,000 women giving birth in a hospital. Women who had already given birth and were giving birth to another child, the rate of severe outcomes for a planned home birth was 1 per 1,000 compared to 2.3 per 1,000 for planned hospital births. The rate of postpartum hemorrhage was 19.6 for every 1,000 women and 37.6 for every 1,000 women giving birth in a hospital.

Researchers involved in the study found that adverse outcomes were less common among planned home births than among planned hospital births — but the differences were only statistically significant for women who had previously given birth. Despite their findings, researchers still emphasize that these conclusions may only apply to regions where midwives are well-trained, in order to assist women at home births and where facilities for transfer of care and transportation in case of an emergency was adequate. Also, researchers noted that the fact that they did not find higher rates of severe complications among planned home births “should not lead to complacency” and that “every avoidable adverse maternal outcome is one too many.”

The heated discussion of the relative safety of a planned home birth lives on and studies continue to be too small to compare severe maternal complications between planned home and planned hospital birth among low risk women. Researchers, at the end of their study, concluded that, “Low risk women in primary care with planned home birth at the onset of labour had a lower rate of severe acute maternal morbidity, postpartum haemorrhage and manual removal of placenta than those with planned hospital birth. These differences were statistically significant for parous women.”

In a policy statement on Planned Home Births, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated, “The AAP concurs with the recent statement from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) that the safest setting for a child’s birth is a hospital or birthing center, but recognizes that women and their families may desire a home birth for a variety of reasons. Pediatricians should advise parents who are planning a home birth that AAP and ACOG recommend only midwives who are certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. There should be at least one person present at the delivery whose primary responsibility is the care of the newborn infant and who has the appropriate training, skills and equipment to perform a full resuscitation of the infant. All medical equipment, and the telephone, should be tested before the delivery, and the weather should be monitored. A previous arrangement needs to be made with a medical facility to ensure a safe and timely transport in the event of an emergency.”

Do you think it’s safer to give birth at home?

In the most shocking and fascinating news to trickle out this week (yep! Even bigger than Kim Kardashian’s top secret baby name), the Venezuelan Congress will discuss legislation that would prohibit bottle feeding infants. This would be done as part of a larger effort to both encourage breastfeeding and reduce the use of baby formula. A lawmaker of the ruling Socialist Party in Venezuela, Legislator Odalis Monzon, said that the proposal would “prohibit all types of baby bottles” as as way to improve children’s health across the country as well as reestablish the bonds between mother and baby.

Monzon, in a television interview given last Thursday, said, “Every baby has the right to breastfeeding. We want to increase the love (between mother and child) because this has been lost as a result of these transnational companies selling formula.” Talk about a knockout punch — I’m not sure of any other country in the world that’s made a connection between bottle feeding and love lost between parent and child. In 2007, Venezuela passed the Law for the Promotion and Support for Breast-feeding, but Monzon said that the law fell short as it did not establish any sanctions for using formula. When pressed, Monzon did not come forward with details on what these new sanctions would be if the proposed change to prohibit bottle feeding would be if the law is passed by Congress. The likelihood of it passing is high due to the fact that the Socialist Party (where the legislation was born) holds the majority. Currently, Venezuela’s Health Ministry reported that 27.1 percent of mothers in the country who are able to breastfeed actually do so. The aim of officials is to increase that number to 70 percent by 2019.

Monzon did note that exceptions to the legislation would be allowed in the event that there was a death of the mother or that a woman’s breast milk production was limited — but that would have to be determined by the health ministry before a mother would be given the okay to formula feed. The groundbreaking legislation would also provide for the creation of more breast-milk banks throughout the country as well as require companies to set aside space for mothers to nurse. There’s no word on what type of punishment violators will face.

A lawmaker from the Justice First party, Eduardo Marin, finds the proposal “unacceptable and alarming,” and if I’m completely honest, I think most would agree. He said that the 2007 law that Monzon is pushing to amend was aimed at promoting breastfeeding, not “questioning, stigmatizing and practically criminalizing those who have opted for (other methods) of feeding. Marin has it completely correct. The creation and passage of this new law would completely penalize — and at the most extreme, oppress — mothers who bottle fed their children. While it’s amazing to think of the leaps and bounds Venezuela has taken to make breastfeeding the norm for Venezuelans — and for neighboring societies, I think there is something to be said about outlawing bottle feeding entirely.

What do you think? Should a country be allowed to ban bottle feeding?

Check out this sweet little girl!

Yesterday, for his first Father’s Day as a new daddy, Channing Tatum showed off his most adorable new addition, daughter Everly!

Baby girl, who is the first child for the proud parents, looks super cozy in daddy’s lap while her proud mom and dad gaze down at all her little sweetness. Born just a few weeks ago on May 31, 2-week-old Everly made her official internet debut last night on mom and dad’s separate Facebook accounts. The doting daddy captioned the image with: “First Father’s Day with my girls” and do believe me when I tell you that my heart just melted to the floor. Aside from the fact that Jenna looks flawless with her new-mom glow, this family of three is a bunch of stunners — and you can just feel the happiness all over!

Daddy isn’t the only one who’s feeling the love, though. His wife captioned the image, “Our lil’ angel” in her own post and even thanked fans and well wishers for their support and congratulations on Twitter, saying, “Thank you everyone for all the loving messages! Chan, myself and Everly are happy as can be and appreciate them all.” These two are so down-to-earth and appreciative, y’all. I almost can’t handle their cuteness.

Also, anyone else love the photo reveal? I do. When it comes to birth announcements a quick photo is simple, touching and it works — especially if you’re a celebrity. And let’s be honest, any chance to hem and haw at Channing Tatum is a welcome distraction, amirite or amirite?

The wait is over! According to a source close to the reality TV star, earlier this morning Kim Kardashian and her beau, Kanye West, became parents, welcoming a baby girl into the world! No word yet on baby’s name, but the starlet did drop a few baby name hints throughout her pregnancy.

Baby girl West arrived slightly ahead of schedule (fashionably early?!) — Kim reportedly wasn’t due until July. Unlike all the other reports, People confirmed that proud new daddy Kanye was by his doting girlfriend’s side throughout delivery and was there to meet his little princess as soon as she arrived.

Baby girl, whose name has yet to be revealed, was reportedly born at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in West Hollywood and made her debut just in time for daddy to celebrate his first Father’s Day. In true Kardashian fashion, baby’s birth wasn’t without drama. According to Us Weekly, a hospital source revealed that baby was “five weeks early. Kim got sick last night and had the baby early.” Thankfully, the source added, “They’re all doing great and amazing!” Reports made by TMZ say that Kim delivered baby girl naturally. Her contractions began Friday night.

Chances are that due to baby’s early birth, she’ll be in the NICU so that doctors can ensure her health and keep a close eye on Kardashian’s precious new cargo. While preemie babies do face some health and developmental risks, it’s way too early to jump to any conclusions. From the looks of it, though, it sounds like baby KimYe is doing just fine in the real world!

And while the gossip sites work to hammer out the details on just how Kim delivered, we’re floored to hear that both mom and baby are doing well! Congratulations to the new parents, the entire Kardashian-West clan — we can’t wait to meet your little diva!

We’ve been hitting up moms who are entrepreneurs and businesswomen and finding out what it’s like for them to start and run a company. Now that we’re gearing up for Father’s Day, we thought why not get the behind-the-scenes scoop from a dad who’s similarly juggling career and family? And what better person to talk to than Neil Grimmer, whose company, Plum Organics was — and still is – inspired by his two daughters.

The Bump: What inspired you start Plum Organics?

Neil Grimmer: I was a designer before this. Back in early 2000′s, I also was an Iron Man triathlete and distance runner, and I was making these crazy concoctions for myself so I could do these races. Everyone at work knew this, so one of the assignments I was given was to work with a food company that wanted to realize the future of food. What we came up with was that is was about healthy, more sustainable foods and that it was about healthy, sustainable businesses. It was a unique opportunity to not only create better food, but also a better company. Life changed, and I went from being a designer to being a dad.

When my kids were 1 and 3, my wife and I were packing healthy lunch boxes for my eldest, Paxton, in the morning, and making my youngest, Izzy, squash at 10:00 at night because we were working parents. We thought, there has got to be a better way to offer healthy food to our little ones. We had this idea that active parents needed to find ways not to compromise their values, even if they had crazy, hectic lifestyles. That’s where the food pouch came in. We needed to find packaging that would let us bring kids the healthiest food we could find. It had to be super convenient and as flexible as young parents needed it to be.

TB: So you were the first baby food company to use food pouches?

NG: Yes. That innovation has transformed the category. There wasn’t a whole lot of innovation happening, and baby food companies weren’t engaging young, modern parents who had very busy lives. So the innovation hit at right time. I think we were successful because we were a young, smart brand. We didn’t take it too seriously and knew all the follies of being parent. We wanted to be a brand for those young parents because we are our core consumer, in a way. Bringing that packing to the market meant we could make a product with Greek yogurt and quinoa, that’s jam-packed full of health and nutrition that never really had been a part of that category before.

TB: What are your top three pieces of advice for people looking to start their own business?

NG: Make it personal. There are some great brands that I admire, and they all started with very personal connections to what they were doing. For me, it was being inspired by my two daughters and, quite frankly, by the challenge of being a young modern, parent. Everyone in our company has some connection to it, whether they’re parents themselves or they care about healthy eating.

Define the purpose of your business around a mission. How will you change the lives of who you serve? We talked about being advocates for tiny taste buds. Make sure everyone in your business knows that mission.

Take the leap. It can be really scary experience to start a company. There are often super talented people interested in starting companies, but they’re already well employed and have income that’s hard to step away from. You have to step out of that comfort zone to start a business and take a risk. If you get the first two things right — making it personal and having a mission — that will give you the confidence to take the leap.

TB: What was your biggest challenge in starting the company?

NG: In the early days, the tough part was getting retailers to embrace the pouch. They already had their shelves stocked with jars, and jarred baby food companies were telling them it was a bad idea. We had to sell the vision. After that, when they started seeing sales and seeing that the consumer was interested, then it was easier. Later, it was the scaling of the business. We’ve had rapid growth in the past six years. We’ve had to match that with the size of the team and the production capacity, and that has been a challenge. Now we have 90 employees and three offices — Bay Area, New York and outside of London.

TB: What has been your biggest joy?

NG: For me personally, bringing home a product that just launched and having my girls freak out about it is the best thing out there. Or if they say, “Hey, my friends want some fruit Shredz. Can you hook us up?” As a dad, I think we want to not only raise great kids but to also please our kids, and I get a ton of pleasure out of that.

TB: Looking back, is there anything you’d do differently?

NG: There have been tons of lessons learned. It’s important for young companies to be really nimble and flexible. As a designer, I worked with rapid prototyping. That meant getting an idea out there quickly by mocking it up with duct tape and hot glue to look at, learn from and iterate on. I’ve used that concept to help build a business. Last year, we launched 45 products. Some worked better than others. You have to make sure you always have a foot forward and you’re always flexible to get something off the table if it doesn’t work out, and to try the next thing.

TB: Would you say that being a father make you a better businessman?

NG: I would! We talk about this company being inspired by love. We have empathy at the core of what we do. I’m a huge advocate of that being our way of doing business. We’re about hugging it out, as opposed to fighting it out. We take a personal approach to everything we do in business.

TB: Plum is doing some exciting things to help children in need. Tell us about them!

NG: We started our company to change the way kids eat in America. Our goal was to bring them the best food from their first bite. Once we became successful and gained a toehold in getting healthier foods to kids across the country, we became increasingly aware that there were 16 million kids we were not servicing. 1 in 5 kids in the US go hungry, even though it’s known as the land of plenty. I think it’s a travesty. We saw a pre-screening of A Place At the Table and were inspired to do something about that issue. We wanted to figure out what we could do to really solve the problem. At the end of the day, we designed The Super Smoothie, a product with the nutritional content to help hungry kids thrive to their full potential. We developed it with Dr. Alan Greene and it has spinach, white beans, carrots and chia. The product was designed to be donated, and along with our partners, we’ve donated a half million this year to be given out to little ones in need.

We believe that when little ones are full of the right nutrients, they have the potential to affect the world. I think the next phase of this is to figure out how to get consumers to really care about this issue and get them involved. We’d like to create a broader network to get this thing to scale bigger.

Once upon a time, in Duluth, Minnesota, a busy mom of five (five!) named Trish Staine was in the middle of training for a half-marathon. (Where she found time for this is unknown). At 33 and super fit, her youngest being 7 and her oldest (stepchild) being 20, kids were not part of her future plan. One Sunday evening, after a typical hours long training run, Trish started experiencing some pretty major back pain. She figured she’d simply injured her back during her run. But because moms are tough as nails, she took a hot shower and got on with life, still rooting her husband on at his basketball game and her daughter at her school play the next day. Once at home, though, the pain intensified and she “felt like (she) was dying.”

Well, let’s see, what else besides a back injury would feel like dying? Ohhhh, labor! Turns out, she was having a baby! But how could this be? She’d been pregnant before, and she knew what it felt like. But this time she never felt a kick, didn’t gain weight, and her husband had recently had a vasectomy (which perhaps unbeknownst to them, has an up to 9% failure rate in the first six months).

Shortly after arriving at the hospital from her severe back pain, a lovely new 6 pound baby girl arrived, and the very shocked parents welcomed her by naming her Mira (short for Miracle).

And they all lived happily (probably on extra birth control) ever after!

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced its annual stats on births — there were about 3,958,000 babies born in the US in 2012. That’s about the same as 2011′s 3,953,593 babies. The fact that the birth rate hasn’t changed much from year to year is significant because the birth rate had been on decline from 2007 too 2011. Guess people are back to making babies!

So when are they doing it? The CDC says that the most popular birth month last year was August (362,000 babies) and the least popular was February (305,000). Maybe there’s something to the notion that people get to babymaking more when the weather’s cold.

What’s your due date or baby’s birth date? Have you noticed more friends having babies or fewer?
